Egypt pledges full support for Libya’s sovereignty
(MENAFN) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi reaffirmed on Monday his nation’s steadfast support for Libya’s sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity during discussions in Cairo with eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar.
Haftar attended the meeting alongside his deputy Saddam Khalifa and his chief of staff Khaled Khalifa, while Egypt’s intelligence chief Hassan Rashad was also present.
According to reports, a statement from the Egyptian presidency highlighted that Sisi emphasized the importance of countering all external interference in Libya and called for the departure of foreign forces and mercenaries, underscoring Egypt’s unwavering support for Libya’s unity and stability.
The statement further mentioned that the Egyptian president reaffirmed Cairo’s endorsement of initiatives aimed at resolving the Libyan crisis, particularly those designed to hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.
Haftar voiced gratitude for Egypt’s “pivotal role” and Sisi’s personal efforts in maintaining security and stability in Libya, as well as for Cairo’s ongoing support for the Libyan population since the conflict began, the statement added.
Efforts by the United Nations mission in Libya are ongoing to facilitate elections as a means of resolving the impasse between the country’s two rival administrations.
Libya continues to be split between two governments: one in Tripoli, led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, which controls the western regions, and another established by parliament in early 2022, headed by Osama Hammad in Benghazi, which governs the east and much of the south.
Sisi and Haftar also reviewed broader regional issues, including the situation in Sudan, the presidency noted. Both sides agreed on the necessity of enhancing regional and international efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution that maintains Sudan’s stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The statement emphasized that Sudan’s stability is closely connected to the national security of both Egypt and Libya.
Since April 2023, Sudan has experienced intense fighting between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), resulting in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions.
