KABUL (Pajhwok): Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a daylong summit in New Delhi on Friday, focusing on trade, defense, and energy ties amid Western sanctions over the war in Ukraine, Al Jazeera reported.

This is Putin's first visit to India since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. India, the top buyer of Russian arms, is also seeking relief from U.S. sanctions on Russian oil imports.

Moscow aims to boost trade with India to $100 billion by 2030, up from $68 billion in 2024.

The day began with a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and a wreath-laying at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial.

Meetings followed at Hyderabad House, where the leaders were scheduled to discuss trade, defense, and strategic cooperation.
