Nicholas COPPEL is Honorary Fellow in Melbourne University's School of Social and Political Sciences, President of the Australia Myanmar Institute and an active member of Diplomats Without Borders.

In his diplomatic career he was Australia's Ambassador to Myanmar, Deputy High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Deputy Ambassador to the Philippines and also served in Washington DC. From 2011-2013 he headed the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), an Australian-led regional peacekeeping and state building program of support to Solomon Islands following a period of ethnic conflict. The Solomon Islands awarded him its second highest honour, the Cross of Solomon Islands, in appreciation of his work.

Since leaving the foreign service, Nicholas has published academic articles, book chapters and most recently co-authored the monograph, Myanmar's Digital Coup – How the World Responded (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024). The book is a critical analysis of how the international community is responding to Myanmar's 2021 coup d'etat.

His opinion editorials have been published in The Australian, AsiaLink Insights, the ASPI Strategist, Monash Lens and Nikkei Asia, and he is frequently interviewed for his insights including by Voice of America, BBC World Service, ABC 4 Corners, ABC Radio National, ABC TV's The World, The Age and The Australian.

Nicholas holds a Bachelor of Economics from the Australian National University and a Master of Business Administration from the London Business School.
