SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank Remain Systemically Important Banks In RBI's 2025 Classification
These banks will continue to maintain additional Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital requirements over and above the Capital Conservation Buffer.
For 2025, the D-SIB classification places SBI in Bucket 4, requiring an additional CET1 buffer of 0.80 per cent of risk-weighted assets.
HDFC Bank is assigned to Bucket 2 with a 0.40 per cent CET1 requirement, while ICICI Bank falls under Bucket 1, with an additional requirement of 0.20 per cent.
Buckets 5 and 3 remain unoccupied for the year, corresponding to CET1 requirements of 1.00 per cent and 0.60 per cent, respectively.
The RBI's framework for identifying and regulating Domestic Systemically Important Banks was introduced on July 22, 2014, and updated on December 28, 2023.
Under this framework, the central bank annually discloses the names of D-SIBs and assigns them to buckets based on their Systemic Importance Scores (SIS). Higher buckets attract higher additional CET1 capital requirements.
Foreign banks operating in India that are designated as Global Systemically Important Banks (G-SIBs) by their home regulators must also maintain proportionate CET1 surcharges in India.
The requirement is calculated based on their India-specific risk-weighted assets relative to their global consolidated balance sheet. (KNN)
