Turkey prepares to lead Black Sea security efforts
(MENAFN) Türkiye has expressed its willingness to take a leading role in Black Sea maritime security alongside partners, contingent on post-war security guarantees under a mutually agreed peace deal, diplomatic sources told Anadolu on Tuesday.
Following recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea on Nov. 28, Ankara reiterated warnings against the expansion of the war toward its coasts and the risk of broader regional escalation. Sources emphasized that Türkiye will not allow any actor—directly involved or not—to threaten the security of the Black Sea.
Diplomatic sources noted that final decisions on any peace agreement remain the prerogative of Russia and Ukraine, and Türkiye supports negotiations aimed at ending the war. Since the start of the conflict in February 2022, Türkiye has played a central role in securing consensus on key initiatives, including the Black Sea Grain Initiative and prisoner exchanges, maintaining dialogue with both Moscow and Kyiv. Türkiye confirmed its readiness to assume responsibilities in the maritime domain of the Black Sea as part of post-peace security guarantees.
Türkiye also highlighted its strategic role in European defense. As NATO’s second-largest army and second-biggest contributor to alliance operations, Türkiye exports defense products worth over $7 billion annually, supported by a robust defense industry employing roughly 100,000 people. Diplomatic sources stressed that excluding Türkiye from European defense initiatives would be counterproductive given its capabilities.
Sources reiterated support for NATO’s open-door policy, grounded in Article 10 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows new members to join if their accession strengthens the security of existing allies. Türkiye emphasized that if current members believe enlargement is not feasible at a given time, that perspective should also be respected.
Since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, Türkiye has consistently backed Ukraine’s territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty, underlining its commitment to both regional stability and international law.
