UP Narrows Power Demand-Supply Gap To Near Zero In 202526: Mos

(MENAFN- KNN India) Lucknow, Dec 2 (KNN) There has been substantial progress in electricity availability and distribution in Uttar Pradesh during 2025–26, with the gap between demand and supply reduced to nearly zero, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Naik, informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

As of October 31, 2025, the state has been allocated 9,935.1 MW of firm power and 250.6 MW from unallocated central sector quotas.

While electricity supply and distribution remain primarily the responsibility of the state government and its utilities, the central government supplements this through power generation from central sector public undertakings.

Under the ongoing Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Uttar Pradesh is implementing segregation of mixed-load feeders with more than 30 per cent agricultural load into dedicated agricultural and non-agricultural feeders.

A total of 1,802 feeders have been sanctioned for segregation, alongside the solarisation of 3.7 lakh agricultural pumps under the PM KUSUM scheme. These works are currently at various stages of implementation.

The RDSS provides performance-linked financial support to state-owned distribution companies (DISCOMs) to reduce Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses and the gap between Average Cost of Supply (ACS) and Average Revenue Realized (ARR).

In Uttar Pradesh, loss reduction and smart metering projects worth Rs 40,739 crore have been sanctioned across five DISCOMs, including a central grant of Rs 16,570 crore. Of this, Rs 5,774.35 crore has been released so far.

The projects involve network strengthening through upgrading substations and transformers, conductor replacement, feeder segregation, and deployment of smart meters to enhance billing efficiency, reduce errors, and provide real-time data.

Performance under RDSS is closely monitored against benchmarks such as timely subsidy payments, regulatory compliance, and financial reporting.

These measures, combined with collaborative efforts between the Centre and the State, have led to a reduction in AT&C losses from 27.11 per cent in FY21 to 19.54 per cent in FY25, reflecting improved operational efficiency in the state's electricity distribution network.
