Amman, Dec. 2 (Petra) – Jordan has become the first Arab country to develop and launch a national index to measure and evaluate future cities, a step described as a national necessity to improve quality of life and enhance service efficiency through sound urban planning, modern technologies, and sustainability principles, according to Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDC).
The announcement followed the corporation's approval on Monday of the standards and criteria for establishing future cities, unveiled during a workshop attended by representatives of public and private institutions, universities, experts, specialists, and young professionals.
Director General of the HUDC, Jomana Atiyat‏, said that key performance indicators serve as a core tool for assessing the performance of Jordanian cities as they work toward achieving the concept of a "future city."
She noted that launching the "Standards and Foundations for Establishing Future Cities" is a national achievement aligned with the aspirations of His Majesty King Abdullah II and reflects his vision for implementing comprehensive modernization.
She added that this model is the first Arab version to include a measurement criterion led by a government entity at the city level.
Atiyat explained that the model should be treated as a flexible tool open to development and periodic updates, recommending that it be reviewed every three years to reassess current conditions in line with global trends and expert insights.
The launch of the index coincides with the rollout of the "Amra City Project," which will be designed and planned according to the latest planning and sustainability standards.
