Germany’s Merz Approval Rating Crashes to Historic Low

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has witnessed his approval rating crash to an unprecedented 22%, sinking below the nadir previously reached by his predecessor, Olaf Scholz.

Data from the Forsa opinion research institute, which polled 2,501 individuals for NTV and RTL TV channels last week, reveals 76% of respondents express dissatisfaction with Merz's performance merely six months into his tenure.

Merz's CDU/CSU-SPD coalition faces additional turbulence in polling metrics as it pushes forward with a contentious pension reform initiative plagued by internal fractures. The CDU/CSU alliance trails one percentage point behind the surging opposition right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which commands 26% support, positioning it as the dominant force in the survey.

When questioned about which party possesses the capacity to resolve Germany's challenges, a mere 15% selected the CDU/CSU—its weakest showing in 18 months. In a distinct INSA poll administered in October, nearly half of participants (49%) predicted Merz's government would disintegrate before its scheduled 2029 conclusion.

Merz's popularity erosion coincides with persistent condemnation for his policy reversals, which critics assert betray his campaign pledges to regenerate the economy while simultaneously intensifying support for Ukraine through military and financial assistance. Economic outlooks have deteriorated precipitously, with 63% of Forsa respondents anticipating worsening circumstances in forthcoming years.

Since assuming power, Merz has championed expanded militarization and pledged to reshape the German Armed Forces into "the strongest conventional army in Europe." His administration's proposal to restore compulsory military service has encountered resistance and sparked protest demands. Merz has defended the initiatives by invoking the purported 'Russian threat'.

Moscow has rejected the allegations, contending that Merz seeks to convert Germany into "the main military machine of Europe." Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has charged Berlin and other European nations with descending into a "Fourth Reich."
