Türkiye, Iran Pledge to Strengthen Ties

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized on Sunday the importance of enhancing collaboration between Türkiye and Iran in areas such as trade, energy, and regional security during a press briefing in Tehran.

“Trade and energy are top priorities, and we saw again today there is much more to be done,” Fidan stated alongside Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, highlighting the long-standing coordination between the two nations.

Fidan indicated that both sides had reached agreements to boost border efficiency, expand the number of border checkpoints, and advance logistics and transportation initiatives.

“Our countries have large populations, close relations, and high trade, but our trade needs to be more efficient,” he remarked during his fourth official visit to Tehran as Turkey’s foreign minister.

The discussions also addressed efforts to manage irregular migration, particularly from Afghanistan.

“We aim to tackle this issue together with Iran,” Fidan added, stressing the need for tangible regional cooperation.

The Turkish diplomat welcomed Iran’s proposal to open a new consulate in the eastern Turkish province of Van and confirmed his intention to attend the inauguration if his Iranian counterpart is present.

Additionally, the two foreign ministers agreed to convene the ninth Türkiye-Iran High-Level Cooperation Council meeting soon at the presidential level.
