Russia Accuses British Media of Misrepresenting Putin

(MENAFN) The Russian embassy in the United Kingdom has launched sharp criticism against British news organizations, alleging they deliberately twisted President Vladimir Putin's statements regarding the ongoing Ukraine war.

In a Thursday statement posted to its official website, the diplomatic mission singled out multiple British publications, naming The Daily Telegraph among outlets it accused of permitting "serious distortions" of Putin's recent remarks made during his Kyrgyzstan visit.

"His words were effectively doctored to align with the UK's official narrative," the embassy declared.

According to the mission, Putin was falsely portrayed as stating that Moscow itself planned to continue combat operations until Ukraine's complete destruction. The embassy characterized this interpretation as fundamentally misleading.

"In particular, he was alleged to have said that it was Russia that intended to fight until the last Ukrainian dies," the statement noted.

The diplomatic office then provided what it described as Putin's unaltered comments to demonstrate the alleged mischaracterization: "…And then there are others, those who still continue to believe that Kupyansk is somehow back under Ukrainian control and who insist on continuing the fighting until the last Ukrainian is killed. <…> The ones attacking Mr. Witkoff [US special envoy Steve Witkoff] are precisely those who align with this second point of view, those who want to join the Ukrainian establishment in siphoning off money while prolonging hostilities until the last Ukrainian dies. But I have already said publicly: in fact, we are prepared for this."

The embassy warned that fabricating such statements carries dangerous consequences.

"Such distortions… only add fuel to the fire and play into the hands of those in the West who… wish to fight until the last Ukrainian," the mission cautioned.

Steve Witkoff, Washington's special envoy, is scheduled to arrive in Moscow within days to present a peace proposal developed by U.S. officials. Though the plan's complete details haven't been publicly disclosed, reports indicate it would require Kyiv to relinquish territory in Russian-controlled Donbass, scale back military capabilities, and abandon NATO membership ambitions.

European allies of Ukraine have firmly opposed any territorial compromises and continue backing Kyiv's NATO integration goals.

Moscow's forces have seized more than twenty-four Ukrainian settlements over the past fortnight, including Kupyansk—a strategically vital transportation center in the Kharkov Region. Ukrainian authorities maintain the city remains under their jurisdiction.
