U.S. Holds "All The Cards" on Tariffs, Says Trump

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has declared US dominance in trade negotiations through his tariff policy, asserting the measures prevent America from becoming "a poor and pathetic laughingstock again."

Last April, Trump rolled out extensive import levies targeting numerous countries globally, justifying the action by pointing to what he characterized as inequitable trade arrangements. The US leader invoked the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to legally support the tariffs. This statute grants presidential authority to control or prohibit cross-border commerce and monetary exchanges when a national emergency involving external threats has been declared.

Critics in Congress have challenged the policy, expressing concern over potential damage to the nation's economic health.

Writing on Truth Social Saturday, Trump stated: "Tariffs have made our Country Rich, Strong, Powerful, and Safe…, and because of what I have set in place, WE HAVE ALL THE CARDS."

The Republican leader cautioned that "Evil, American hating Forces are fighting us at the United States Supreme Court."

Earlier in November, Trump forecast a "national security catastrophe" should his tariff program be dismantled, warning of US economic losses exceeding $2 trillion.

This past summer, the US Court of Appeals determined Trump had exceeded his presidential powers by implementing tariffs through IEEPA, declaring that congressional approval is required for such actions. However, the court declined to eliminate the duties while awaiting a Supreme Court determination.

The timing of the Supreme Court's verdict remains uncertain, though legal experts anticipate a ruling potentially arriving by July 2026.

Separately, during his Thursday Thanksgiving remarks, Trump revealed plans for income tax reductions, stating "we will be cutting income tax, could be almost completely cutting it."

In early November, the US president promised direct payments, pledging that "a dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high-income people!) will be paid to everyone," financed through tariff collections.

Shortly thereafter, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent informed media the tariff dividend might materialize "in lots of forms," encompassing tax relief options.
