Trump Muses Venezuela Might Join US After World Baseball Classic Triumph

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump made a lighthearted remark suggesting that Venezuela could potentially become the 51st state of the United States following the country’s victory over Italy in a World Baseball Classic semifinal, according to reports.

Reacting to the 4-2 result, Trump praised the Venezuelan team’s performance in a post on his Truth Social platform, highlighting their strong showing in the tournament.

"Wow! Venezuela defeated Italy tonight, 4-2, in the WBC (Baseball!) Semifinal. They are looking really great.

"Good things are happening to Venezuela lately! I wonder what this magic is all about? STATEHOOD, #51, ANYONE?" Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

The comment comes amid ongoing political developments between Washington and Caracas.

Earlier this year, US forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Jan. 3, setting off a chain of changes in the country’s leadership and policies.

Following that event, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez assumed the role of interim president.

Reports indicate that the transition has been accompanied by adjustments to Venezuela’s key oil regulations as well as the release of several political detainees.

Trump has previously made similar remarks about expanding US statehood, including past suggestions that Canada could join the United States as its 51st state.
