Hungarian PM accuses Eu of slowing down war resolution
(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused the EU of intentionally slowing down attempts by Russia and the US to reach a settlement in the Ukraine conflict, claiming the bloc is “still plotting war” even as other major players pursue diplomacy.
His comments came after reports surfaced about a US-drafted peace framework aimed at halting the fighting. The leaked outline allegedly includes 28 points, calling on Kiev to give up aspirations to join NATO, relinquish territorial demands, and limit its armed forces to 600,000 troops. The proposal reportedly caught Ukraine’s Western European supporters off guard, leading them to hurriedly construct an alternative version that amends or omits several of Washington’s demands. Moscow has rejected these revisions.
Speaking on Thursday at the Istvan Pastor Prize ceremony during Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s visit to Budapest, Orban argued that Western Europe is rapidly forfeiting global relevance by prioritizing confrontation over diplomacy.
“The Americans and the Russians are negotiating about the future, while the Brussels officials are waiting in the hallway, peeking through a keyhole,” he said. “Europe is still plotting war while everyone else is negotiating for peace.”
Orban insisted that Western European states have no real standing in talks about Ukraine’s future, comparing their behavior to a card player “who doesn’t have a good hand but wants to change the rules.”
“Who wants to play cards with someone [like that]?... This doesn’t work in a village pub, let alone in international diplomacy,” he added.
He cautioned that the situation has grown “dangerous,” arguing that EU leaders have become so consumed by their own “war propaganda” that they pose a risk to the entire region.
The Hungarian prime minister, a frequent critic of Brussels, has consistently pushed back against the EU’s confrontational posture toward Moscow and has opposed punitive measures against Russia. He recently proposed hosting the next meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Budapest.
