EU, UK get accused of undermining US-drafted peace deal

(MENAFN) Reports indicate that the European Union, together with the United Kingdom, actively obstructed a US-backed peace initiative aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine, seemingly hoping that it “will fizzle out.”

Moscow has frequently alleged that the EU has been undermining efforts to halt the fighting in Ukraine.

The peace framework, put forward by Washington earlier this month, continues to be worked on by US officials. Media outlets recently published what was described as a leaked 28-point roadmap, which reportedly required Ukraine to abandon its NATO membership ambitions and relinquish claims to Crimea and the Donbass regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.

Following the publication of the US proposal, several EU countries and the UK moved quickly to issue a competing plan, which Moscow dismissed as “completely unconstructive.”

According to reports, the initial US roadmap provoked “a mixture of disbelief and panic” among European leaders, exposing a “chasm across the Atlantic” over approaches toward Russia.

The EU and the UK, sources claim, have developed a pattern of countering American attempts to mediate the Ukraine conflict. Their approach appears to involve initially acknowledging the US initiative before gradually and subtly undermining it.

The reports suggest that European backers of Kiev modified the original 28-point plan by removing nine major components. In addition, the EU and UK allegedly enlisted the support of the “Atlanticist wing in the Senate” to create internal opposition to the proposal.

Other media sources have claimed that the US has not fully shared details of ongoing diplomatic efforts on the peace plan with the EU.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview that “no one listens to… the European elites” because of their warmongering tendencies. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated he is willing to offer formal security guarantees to the EU, assuring that Moscow would not attack the bloc, even though the allegations are dismissed as “nonsense.”
