US halts visa issuance for Afghanistans

(MENAFN) The United States has announced an immediate suspension of visa issuance for individuals traveling with Afghan passports, as stated by reports.

"The Department is taking all necessary steps to protect U.S. national security and public safety," the US State Department said in a post on the social media platform X.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the US "has no higher priority than protecting our nation and our people."

The move follows an incident in which Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan citizen, was reportedly identified as the suspected gunman in an attack near the White House that resulted in the death of a National Guard member and injuries to another.

In response to the attack, US authorities announced a pause on all immigration-related processing for Afghan nationals.

Additionally, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirmed that it has stopped all asylum decisions. "USCIS has halted all asylum decisions until we can ensure that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible. The safety of the American people always comes first," stated USCIS Director Joseph Edlow on X.
