S. Africa police detain thirteen people in Gauteng

(MENAFN) South African police have detained 13 people in Gauteng Province in connection with 14 incidents reported during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, including thefts targeting international delegates and violent protest actions.

The details were provided on Monday, November 25, during a post-summit media briefing led by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who was accompanied by several Members of the Mayoral Committee. The summit took place from November 22 to 23 at the Nasrec Expo Centre.

Lesufi acknowledged that the gathering had been marred by various disruptions and criminal activity. “You all know, South Africans being South Africans, there was no way that we would not have problems,” he remarked, before outlining the incidents recorded during the summit period. Among them was the theft of cell phones and luggage belonging to Vietnamese delegates at the Checkers Sandton City Mall. Police arrested four suspects shortly after the incident.

At the DaVinci Hotel, another suspect was apprehended for possessing a firearm without proper authorization. Meanwhile, at the Mercure Hotel in Ferndale, police investigated the theft of a firearm belonging to a South African Police Service (SAPS) member, along with cases involving unlawful possession of ammunition and the negligent handling of a firearm. Two individuals were arrested in connection with these offenses.

Lesufi also highlighted a broader crime crackdown leading up to the summit. Between November 17 and 20, authorities arrested a total of 1,799 people across Gauteng. These arrests included individuals suspected of vandalizing infrastructure as well as those linked to serious crimes such as theft, kidnapping, intimidation, and extortion. “Among these, 1,075 cases were for contact crimes, which include assault, rape, murder, attempted murder, and house robberies,” he said.

He added that the provincial government and law enforcement agencies would continue taking steps to ensure that major international events hosted in South Africa are conducted safely and without disruption.
