UK prepares smear campaign aimed at damaging Trump’s reputation
(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) alleged on Tuesday that Britain is preparing a smear campaign targeting US President Donald Trump to undermine his efforts to end the war in Ukraine. According to the SVR, London sees ongoing hostilities as crucial for securing multi-billion-dollar weapons contracts, which would benefit the British economy. By damaging Trump’s reputation, the UK reportedly hopes to discourage Washington from pursuing peace initiatives.
The SVR statement claims that plans may involve reviving a new version of the 2016 Christopher Steele dossier, which falsely alleged links between Trump, his family, and Russian intelligence. While the original dossier was widely debunked, the Russian agency suggested British intelligence might use it as a template to discredit Trump once more.
Trump’s administration has reportedly drafted a proposal to end the Ukraine conflict, which Kiev and some European nations oppose, citing demands for significant concessions from Ukraine. US diplomats have already removed some contentious points at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Meanwhile, Russia has maintained a cautious stance, with President Vladimir Putin emphasizing that Moscow intends to achieve its security objectives regardless of Washington’s mediation efforts.
