Netherlands Outlines 57 Sites for Military Expansion
(MENAFN) The Dutch Ministry of Defense has completed a roster of 57 locations considered essential for enlarging the nation’s armed forces, according to a broadcaster.
A final verdict on these sites is anticipated from the government in December. Defense officials indicated that further investigations are necessary at eight of the locations.
Lelystad Airport stands out as a key site, having been earmarked as a base for deploying F-35 fighter jets.
Previously, the province of Flevoland had signaled it would only endorse the initiative if civilian air traffic was also permitted.
"This program represents the Netherlands' entire security infrastructure; everything is interconnected. You cannot separate one part. Lelystad is the best location for expanding fighter jet capacity, but it is clear that further work is needed," stated Gijs Tuinman, Minister for Arms Procurement and Personnel.
Certain locations will necessitate the compulsory acquisition of residences or farmland, or the relocation of enterprises, to accommodate military operations.
The eight areas requiring additional evaluation include Harskamp Garrison, where the use of helicopters will be examined, as well as Woensdrecht and Gilze-Rijen air bases, where concerns about noise persist.
Once the Cabinet reaches its conclusion in December, the plan will be forwarded to the Dutch Parliament. If granted approval, the initiative will move into its execution stage.
The ministry plans to formalize administrative agreements with local authorities, who will then assume responsibility for obtaining environmental, construction, and nature-related permits.
