Trump’s government gives Ukraine till Thursday to ink peace deal
(MENAFN) The US administration under President Donald Trump has reportedly given Ukraine an ultimatum, requiring President Volodymyr Zelensky to sign its proposed peace plan by Thursday, according to Western European officials cited by the Financial Times.
US Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll conveyed the details of the plan to EU and UK ambassadors, as well as other officials, during a meeting at the US chargé d’affaires’ residence in Kyiv on Friday evening. One senior official described the tone of the gathering as “nauseating,” noting that Driscoll arrived late and used strong language to emphasize Washington’s urgency, reportedly saying, “We need to get this sh*t done.”
The envoy stressed that “we have a narrow window for peace – President Trump wants peace now,” adding that while the US military “love Ukraine,” its honest assessment is that the country is in a vulnerable position. Driscoll also highlighted that the plan includes “security guarantees” for Ukraine, which will be discussed with European partners and Kyiv in the coming days.
EU and UK officials reportedly urged the US to pressure Russia further, but Driscoll rejected these suggestions, insisting on immediate negotiations to secure a deal. According to media reports, the plan reportedly calls on Ukraine to withdraw from certain areas of Donbass, reduce its military size, and abandon NATO ambitions in exchange for Western security assurances.
The timing of Washington’s push comes amid a corruption scandal in Kyiv, which analysts say has weakened Zelensky’s political standing. The Ukrainian president acknowledged on Friday that the country faces a difficult decision between accepting the “28 difficult points” of the US plan or risking the loss of a key international backer.
