Russia Calls on U.S. to Abandon Cuba Naval Blockade Plans

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday issued a sharp warning to Washington, urging the United States to abandon any plans for a military blockade of Cuba during a meeting with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.

Speaking alongside Rodriguez Parrilla, Lavrov framed Moscow's position as one shared by much of the world, delivering a pointed call for American restraint.

"Together with the vast majority of the international community, we urge the United States to act with common sense, adopt a responsible stance, and abandon plans for a naval blockade," Lavrov said.

The Russian foreign minister moved swiftly to dismiss suggestions that Moscow's growing ties with Havana carry any anti-American agenda, insisting that all outstanding tensions between Washington and Havana must be resolved at the negotiating table rather than through confrontation.

Russia's commitment to the island nation, Lavrov made clear, is unconditional. "We will continue to support Cuba and the Cuban people in upholding the country's sovereignty and security," he said.

Lavrov also took direct aim at U.S. legislation targeting Cuba, denouncing it as grounded in what he called a demonstrably false premise — that Cuba represents any form of threat to the United States. Moscow, he said, categorically rejects that characterization.
