Zohran Mamdani doesn’t take back previous criticism of Trump

(MENAFN) New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said he stands firmly behind all of his previous remarks about US President Donald Trump — including describing him as a danger to democracy — while characterizing their recent White House meeting as “productive.”

"Everything that I've said in the past, I continue to believe," Mamdani said in an interview aired Sunday, noting that productive political dialogue requires acknowledging differences while recognizing what motivates leaders to sit down for talks.

When asked directly whether he still considers Trump a fascist, he responded, "That's something that I've said in the past, I say today," adding that he valued the fact that their conversation allowed both sides to address disagreements without hesitation. After the meeting, he said the two leaders "are very clear about our positions and our views.”

Responding to questions about whether Trump had guaranteed he would not deploy federal forces to New York, Mamdani said Trump "cared deeply about public safety," but stressed that he relies on the New York Police Department to uphold security under his administration — similar to how previous mayors challenged Trump’s suggestions that National Guard intervention was necessary in certain cities.

Mamdani, who is set to become New York’s first Muslim mayor, said he told Trump that safety is “the cornerstone of an affordability agenda,” pointing to his decision to keep Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who he said has “driven down crime across the five boroughs.”

He also confirmed his intention to generate billions in new revenue through higher taxes on wealthy residents and businesses to fund universal childcare and a range of other initiatives—plans that would require the approval of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani said he recently spoke with Hochul, describing the discussion as constructive and noting that both agreed to collaborate on advancing “the affordability agenda,” though she has not publicly endorsed any tax increases.

"I think raising taxes make the most sense. If there's any alternative that raised the same amount of money, I'm open," Mamdani said.
