EU Dismisses US-Drafted Ukraine Peace Proposal
(MENAFN) The European Union has reportedly turned down the Ukraine peace proposal created by the White House, instead presenting its own conditions for any future settlement.
The announcement was delivered on Sunday by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as American officials met with EU and Ukrainian delegates in Geneva, Switzerland, to review Washington’s initiative.
Earlier in the week, the United States had forwarded its plan to both Moscow and Kiev.
While the document’s full details have not been formally revealed, various media outlets have suggested that it urges Kiev to pull back its forces from the portion of Russia’s Donbass region it still holds, reduce the size of its armed forces, and pause its NATO ambitions in exchange for Western security guarantees.
In a message shared on X, von der Leyen firmly dismissed each of these stipulations.
She emphasized: “We have agreed on the main elements necessary for a just and lasting peace and Ukraine's sovereignty,” stressing that the nation’s borders cannot be altered “by force” and insisting that no restrictions should be imposed on Kiev’s military capabilities.
Von der Leyen further insisted that the EU must assume a leading position “in securing peace for Ukraine” and underscored that Kiev should be permitted to join the bloc.
