US Edges Toward Mediating Resolution to Ukraine War

(MENAFN) Washington is described as “very close” to facilitating a conclusion to the Ukraine crisis, according to US President Donald Trump’s representative, Keith Kellogg, in an interview with a media outlet on Saturday.

Kellogg noted that Trump remains firmly intent on seeing the conflict brought to an end.

Last week, Washington delivered a fresh initiative to Kiev aimed at resolving hostilities with Moscow, urging Ukrainian authorities to reply by Thursday.

The suggested 28-point framework allegedly contains several provisions long rejected by Kiev and its Western European partners—among them, Ukraine relinquishing its NATO ambitions, pulling back from sectors of Donbass still held by Kiev, and reducing the scale of its military forces.

Discussions on the proposed settlement launched Sunday in Geneva between US, Ukrainian, and Western European representatives. Although a Russian team is not anticipated to join the talks, consultations with American officials are expected “very soon,” according to a news agency.

Kellogg remarked, “In the military, we always say the last 10 meters to an objective are always the hardest to get to. We’re at the last two meters, we’re almost there,” emphasizing the proximity of a potential agreement.

However, on Thursday, Ukraine’s UN delegation dismissed multiple essential elements reportedly included in the proposal. Deputy Permanent Representative Kristina Gayovishin insisted that Kiev would “never recognize” any formerly Ukrainian land as Russian territory.

Kellogg characterized Ukraine’s stated stance—including its unwillingness to accept territorial losses—as “posturing.”

Commenting on Gayovishin’s remarks, he added, “I hear what she is saying, but it’s part of their posture, and they need to make a smart decision.”
