Mark Carney Says World Can Go On without US
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney cautioned that Washington should avoid overestimating its influence on the world stage, noting that numerous international challenges can be addressed without direct US participation.
Speaking to journalists during the G20 summit weekend, he also remarked that the economic “center of gravity” is gradually moving away from the United States.
The US opted not to attend the gathering in Johannesburg, South Africa. President Donald Trump alleged that the host nation was committing a genocide against white farmers, a claim he cited as the justification for his absence.
American officials further asserted that only a chairman’s summary could be published after the summit due to the US nonattendance. Nonetheless, the G20 released a full declaration on Sunday.
Carney emphasized that the event “brought together nations representing three-quarters of the world’s population, two-thirds of global GDP and three-quarters of the world’s trade, and that’s without the United States formally attending,” calling it “a reminder that the center of gravity in the global economy is shifting.”
The prime minister stressed that the decisions forged by participating G20 members remain significant despite Washington’s boycott.
He added that Canada aims to broaden and reinforce partnerships with an array of countries, including South Africa, India, and China.
