US Rep. Greene to step down amid clash with Trump
(MENAFN) US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene announced on Friday that she will resign from the House of Representatives early next year, citing ongoing tensions with President Donald Trump and frustration with the so-called “Political Industrial Complex” in Washington. Greene, a Republican representing Georgia’s 14th District, said her final day in office will be January 5, ending her third term mid-way.
In a lengthy statement on social media, Greene emphasized that she had “always represented the common American man and woman” and criticized both major parties for failing to deliver meaningful change for ordinary citizens, pointing to rising national debt, high living costs, and corporate and global influences on politics.
Though long considered one of Trump’s staunchest allies and a leading figure in the MAGA movement, Greene recently clashed with him over the push to release Justice Department files related to convicted financier Jeffrey Epstein. Trump withdrew his endorsement earlier this month, labeling her a “wacky” and “ranting lunatic” and encouraging primary challengers to run against her. Greene said the dispute centered on her demand for full transparency regarding the Epstein documents, accusing Trump of attempting to block their release.
Greene explained her decision by citing personal and political pressures, writing, “I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for.”
She also criticized Trump’s actions during the midterm elections, arguing that Republicans could lose while expecting her to defend him against impeachment after he “hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars” against her.
She added that years of “personal attacks, death threats, lawfare” had affected her and her family, and reiterated her belief that real power rests with ordinary Americans, not elected officials. “Until then I’m going back to the people I love, to live life to the fullest as I always have, and look forward to a new path ahead,” Greene wrote.
Trump responded to the resignation, calling it “great news for the country” and saying, “I think she should be happy.”
