Kazakhstan Joins IAEA's Far East Regional Group
The ministry noted that joining the regional group is an important step toward restoring the sovereign equality of states within the IAEA, in line with the organization's Statute and Kazakhstan's resolution GC(67)/RES/15 adopted by the IAEA General Conference on 29 September 2023.
“This also reaffirms Astana's commitment to supporting peace and global security, strengthening the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime. We highly appreciate member states' efforts to restore sovereign equality in the IAEA and thank the countries of the Far East group for their support and trust,” the ministry said.
The decision grants Kazakhstan full participation in the IAEA's governing bodies. The Foreign Ministry said the country will contribute constructively to the development of peaceful nuclear energy, the responsible use of nuclear technologies, and the strengthening of international mechanisms of trust and transparency.
The IAEA is an international organization established in 1957. It is part of the UN system and is responsible for promoting cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
