FIFA Announces Global, European Playoffs Leading To The 2026 FIFA


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, Nov 20 (KUNA) -- The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) on Thursday conducted the draws for both the global playoff and the European playoff leading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup that will determine the final six spots in a historic edition of the tournament co-hosted by Canada the United States and Mexico.
At FIFAآ's headquarters in Zurich, the global playoff draw shows a matchup between New Caledonia and Jamaica with the winner earning a place in a final showdown against the Democratic Republic of the Congo for one of the two available global playoff tickets.
Another matchup pits Bolivia against Suriname with the victor advancing to face Iraq.
FIFA revealed also the European playoff draw which produced four intense qualification paths involving 16 teams battling for the continentآ's remaining four berths.
The draw set up a matchup between Italy and Northern Ireland while Wales will face Bosnia and Herzegovina, bringing the winner of those two as a host for the path final.
In the second group, Ukraine will play against Sweden while Poland will face Albania with the Ukraine-Sweden winner guaranteed home advantage in the final of that path.
The Third group will have Turkey versus Romania while Slovakia takes on Kosovo with the Slovakia-Kosovo winner set to host the final.
As for last group, Denmark will face North Macedonia while the Czech Republic meets the Republic of Ireland.
The final will be played on the home turf of the winner of the Czech Republic-Ireland semifinal. (end)
