(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Nov 20 (KUNA) - Kuwait has reiterated its full support for United Nations efforts to promote sport as a tool for development and peace, affirming its endorsement of the "Olympic Truce" as a symbol of human dignity and equality.
This came in the speech delivered by Kuwaiti Diplomatic Attachأ© Sarah Al-Hassawi on Wednesday before a plenary session held by the UN General Assembly to discuss the item "Sport for development and peace: building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal".
Al-Hasawi affirmed that sport remains one of the strongest forces for unifying humanity through values of justice, cooperation and mutual respect.
She highlighted Kuwait's National Sports Strategy (2022-2028), launched by the Public Authority for Sports in partnership with the UN Development Programme, which aims to strengthen sports institutions, empower youth and expand equal access to sports in line with Kuwait Vision 2035.
She also pointed to expanding school sports programs and community initiatives that combine physical activity with volunteerism and environmental awareness.
On women's empowerment, she underscored Kuwait's efforts to enhance women's participation through the Kuwait Women's Sports Committee, increased representation in sports federations, and specialized training programs, noting Kuwaiti female athletes represented the country honorably at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Al-Hasawi also praised the UN's "Football for Humanity" initiative supporting Palestinian children and youth, noting that Kuwait recently hosted its first edition under the patronage of Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya in cooperation with the UN.
She concluded by affirming Kuwait's belief that investing in youth and sport is key to building peace and prosperity. (end)
