(MENAFN) An intense dispute unfolded within the Israeli Knesset’s National Security Committee on Wednesday, exposing elements of a draft bill that would permit the execution of Palestinian detainees.

The proposed law includes methods such as lethal injection and a total prohibition on appeals, according to video released by a news agency.

The committee convened to ready the legislation for its second and third readings before it could be enacted, the channel reported.

Footage shared by the channel on the US social media platform X highlighted the contentious discussion and outlined the provisions proposed by the bill’s backers, particularly the far-right Jewish Power Party, headed by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

The bill’s stipulations would apply to anyone who kills a Jew “for being Jewish,” whether planning or committing such an act, and would impose the death penalty as the exclusive form of punishment.

According to the draft, the sentence would be decided “by a simple majority, without the possibility of appeal or commutation through bargaining or pardon.”

Further details indicate that the Israel Prison Service would carry out executions via lethal injection. To avoid delays, the legislation mandates that the sentence be executed within 90 days of the court’s decision.

The session escalated into a heated confrontation between Ben-Gvir and opposition legislator Gilad Kariv of the Yesh Atid Party.
