Google CEO warns against blind trust in AI

(MENAFN) Artificial intelligence systems remain prone to errors and should not be trusted without scrutiny, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai warned, according to reports.

In an interview aired Tuesday, Pichai advised users to rely on multiple search tools rather than depending solely on AI.

AI tools are useful “if you want to creatively write something,” he said, but users “have to learn to use these tools for what they’re good at, and not blindly trust everything they say.” Pichai added, “The current state-of-the-art AI technology is prone to some errors.”

The comments come as Google prepares to launch its next major AI model, Gemini 3.0, expected by the end of the year. Since its 2023 debut, Gemini has faced criticism for restrictive “safety” and “diversity” settings, which produced inaccuracies in image-generation tasks, including misrepresentations of historical figures from U.S. founding fathers to Russian emperors, Catholic popes, and Nazi German soldiers.

Earlier this month, Google faced allegations of secretly allowing Gemini to collect user data without consent. A lawsuit filed in a California federal court claims the company enabled the AI assistant to intercept private communications across Gmail, chat, and video-conferencing services.

The rapid growth of AI technologies has significantly increased valuations across the sector, raising concerns of a potential bubble as tech firms invest heavily to secure a position in the competitive market. The expansion is partly driven by rivals such as ChatGPT, which have challenged Google’s dominance in online search and accelerated investment in the field.

Spending on AI among major tech companies is estimated at around $400 billion annually.

When asked whether Google could be affected if an AI bubble bursts, Pichai responded, “I think no company is going to be immune, including us.”
