Dr Khanyisa Brian Mantlana holds a Ph.D. in Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology from Wageningen University (The Netherlands) and Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (Jena, Germany).

He did a M.Sc. degree at the then University of Natal (now UKZN) in Plant Ecophysiology. He worked as a researcher at SANBI, Kirstenbosch, for six years, then joined the Climate Change Branch at the Department of Environmental Affairs for six years.

In 2017, Dr Mantlana joined the CSIR, where he leads the Holistic Climate Change Impact Area at the CSIR.

Dr Mantlana is a commissioner on the Presidential Climate Commission.
