China, Vietnam to conduct joint naval patrol in Beibu Gulf

(MENAFN) China’s Defense Ministry on Tuesday announced that Chinese and Vietnamese navies will carry out a two-day joint patrol in the Beibu Gulf.

A combined vessel formation from both navies will conduct their 39th joint patrol in the Beibu Gulf from Wednesday to Thursday, according to a ministry statement cited by state media.

Beibu Gulf, also called the Gulf of Tonkin, is a semi-enclosed area of the South China Sea along the coasts of Vietnam and China.

The patrol will be carried out under existing agreements and coordination mechanisms between the two militaries.

"This will further strengthen practical cooperation between the two militaries and enhance their capability to jointly safeguard the security of the relevant waters," the ministry said.

Earlier in April, the navies conducted a week-long joint patrol in the Gulf of Tonkin.
