UN Approves Gaza International Stabilization Force
(MENAFN) The UN Security Council has passed a resolution, drafted by the United States, endorsing a peace initiative for Gaza and authorizing an “International Stabilization Force” to operate in the territory.
Both Russia and China abstained from the vote, citing concerns that the resolution contains multiple practical limitations and could weaken the two-state solution framework.
On Monday, the 15-member council voted to adopt the US-proposed text, which supports US President Donald Trump’s 20-point proposal aimed at ending the Gaza conflict.
The resolution also legitimizes the “Board of Peace” (BOP), a transitional body intended to oversee governance in the region during the implementation of the plan.
The agreement additionally calls for the establishment of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) under the authority of the BOP.
This force is anticipated to include troops from Arab nations and other countries, with responsibilities that include maintaining security, training a new Palestinian police force, and supervising Gaza’s demilitarization and redevelopment efforts.
US Ambassador Mike Waltz praised the resolution as “another significant step towards a stable Gaza that will be able to prosper and an environment that will allow Israel to live in security,” emphasizing that the ISF will “support the demilitarization of Gaza, [and] dismantle terrorist infrastructure.”
Although Russia had the power to veto the resolution, it chose not to exercise it. Nevertheless, Moscow’s UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, criticized the measure, describing it as “yet another pig in a poke.”
