Indian Navy To Commission First Of 8 Indigenous Mahe-Class ASW Vessels On 24 Nov 2025
The Mahe-class refers to a new series of eight indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW-SWC) being built for the Indian Navy.
These vessels are designed specifically for detecting, tracking, and engaging enemy submarines in coastal, or shallow, waters where larger warships struggle to operate effectively.
The induction marks a notable advance in India's indigenous shipbuilding programme and supports the country's Aatmanirbhar Bharat objectives.
Constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, Mahe represents a new class of compact and agile platforms designed for operations in shallow coastal waters.
The vessel has been engineered for high manoeuvrability, precision, and endurance, enabling effective surveillance and combat roles in the littoral environment.
Mahe is equipped with modern sensors, specialised ASW systems, and select stealth features to detect and counter underwater threats.
Its mission-ready configuration allows it to conduct coastal patrols, secure maritime assets, and respond swiftly to emerging coastal security challenges.
With more than 80 per cent indigenous content, the Mahe-class reflects India's growing proficiency in warship design and maritime manufacturing.
The commissioning of Mahe marks the entry of the first of eight ASW-SWCs being built by CSL.
The addition of these vessels is expected to strengthen the Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities in shallow waters and enhance India's coastal defence architecture, reinforcing the Navy's long-term commitment to indigenisation and maritime self-reliance.
