SpaceX Deploys Ocean-Observing Satellite to Track Rising Sea Levels
(MENAFN) SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the ocean-monitoring Sentinel-6B satellite at 5:21 a.m. UTC Monday (9:21 p.m. PST Sunday) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, NASA confirmed.
"The satellite will build on over 30 years of sea level data to improve weather forecasts, keep ships safe at sea, and protect coastal communities," NASA stated.
Created through a collaboration between NASA and its U.S. and European partners, the Sentinel-6B spacecraft is engineered to track ocean surface heights "down roughly an inch" across approximately 90% of Earth's marine waters.
NASA reported that Sentinel-6B will operate alongside its "twin" satellite, Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, which entered orbit in 2020.
