Germany's New Draft Law Shows Europe No Longer Believes In Peace By Default

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Germany is quietly rewriting its social contract. From 2026, every man turning 18 will be required to register with the Bundeswehr, fill out a detailed questionnaire on health and motivation, and, from 2027, undergo compulsory medical screening.

Service itself will still start as voluntary, but with strong incentives: entry-level pay from about €2,600 a month, the chance to extend contracts, and benefits such as help paying for a driving licence.

Only if volunteer numbers fall short will parliament be able to activate a“needs-based” draft for those already screened and judged fit.

Behind the legal fine print sits a much bigger ambition. After years of shrinking budgets and half-reforms, Germany wants to grow from roughly 180,000 active soldiers today to around 260,000 by 2035 and build a reserve of some 200,000 trained citizens.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has warned that the country must be“ready for war” by 2029.

Germany's New Draft Law Shows Europe No Longer Believes In Peace By Default
The new conservative-led government has promised to turn the Bundeswehr into Europe's strongest conventional army, reflecting two hard realities: Russia's war against Ukraine and growing doubts that the United States will forever underwrite Europe's security.

Germany is not alone. Finland is raising the reservist age limit to 65, building a wartime reserve of about one million people.

Denmark is lengthening service from four to eleven months and, from 2025, bringing women into the draft system.

The Baltic states, Greece and Turkey have kept conscription for years. Step by step, Europe's frontline and near-frontline countries are rebuilding citizen armies instead of relying only on small professional forces.

At home, the debate runs through TikTok and X as much as parliament. Many younger Germans say they would accept a civilian duty but do not want to carry a rifle.

Older generations talk about fairness and national responsibility after a long period in which security was treated as someone else's job.

For Germany, and for Europe, the message is simple: the era of assuming that“big wars are over” is ending, and societies are reshaping themselves accordingly.
