36-Day Closure Of Torkham Border Cripples Local Economy As Traders, Transporters Stage Major Protest In Landi Kotal
The 36-day closure of the Torkham border has severely damaged the local economy of Landi Kotal and surrounding areas, halting commercial activity and directly affecting the livelihoods of thousands.
In response to the prolonged shutdown, political leaders, transporters, customs-clearing agents, traders, labourers and residents staged a major protest at Bacha Khan Chowk in Landi Kotal Bazaar.
Carrying placards, the demonstrators urged Pakistani and Afghan authorities to immediately reopen the border to restore trade and allow the movement of passengers. Participants said the extended closure has created immense hardship for traders, transporters and ordinary citizens on both sides of the border.
Speakers said both countries must reduce tensions and opt for dialogue to find a lasting solution to the issue. They also demanded that Pakistani drivers and civilians stranded on the Afghan side of Torkham be allowed to return under a humanitarian gesture.
