Türkiye Hails DRC-M23 Peace Agreement

(MENAFN) Türkiye issued a statement Sunday endorsing the newly inked peace framework between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government and the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel faction, sealed in Doha.

The accord represents a critical milestone toward achieving lasting peace in the DRC's volatile eastern provinces, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced in an official declaration.

"We commend the efforts of all actors contributing to the process, particularly Qatar, which has played a facilitator role towards the stability of the Great Lakes Region," the ministry stated.

Ankara reaffirmed its dedication to advancing peace initiatives, security cooperation, and regional stability throughout the African continent, the statement added.

Saturday witnessed the DRC government and M23 rebels finalizing the peace pact in Qatar's capital following diplomatic intervention spearheaded by Qatari and US mediators.

The M23 movement—repeatedly accused by Kinshasa and the UN of obtaining military backing from adjacent Rwanda, charges Kigali categorically refutes—has seized control of key strategic territories in eastern DRC throughout this year.

Numerous continental and global mediation campaigns have unfolded, with the most recent initiatives spearheaded by the United States, Qatar, and the African Union.

On Oct. 14, Doha served as the venue for signing a ceasefire monitoring and verification framework between the DRC administration and M23 forces.
