BBC Delivers Formal Apology to Trump

(MENAFN) The BBC has confirmed it delivered an apology to US President Donald Trump following accusations the broadcaster deceptively manipulated footage of his address preceding the 2021 Capitol insurrection.

The UK's public broadcaster acknowledged earlier that a 2024 episode of its Panorama investigative series "gave the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action" to supporters who breached the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021.

A BBC spokesperson disclosed Thursday evening that the network's chair, Samir Shah, had dispatched a personal correspondence to the White House "making clear to President Trump that he and the corporation are sorry" and pledged the documentary would not air again on any platform.

"While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim," the spokesperson said.

Trump, who has consistently rejected claims he provoked the Capitol breach and has charged media outlets with disseminating falsehoods, had threatened legal action demanding $1 billion (£758 million) unless the BBC apologized, withdrew the documentary, and provided financial compensation. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt has branded the network as a "leftist propaganda machine."

The controversy triggered the departures of BBC Director-General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness. Multiple British lawmakers have condemned the broadcaster, with UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch characterizing the edit of Trump's speech as "absolutely shocking."

Trump previously obtained substantial financial settlements from CBS News' parent company, Paramount, and from ABC through legal resolutions.
