German Left Party Chairwoman Calls for Support to Palestinian Cause
(MENAFN) Germany's opposition Left Party issued an urgent appeal Saturday to halt what it characterizes as systematic suppression of pro-Palestinian advocacy across the nation.
Speaking at a state party congress in Berlin, Left Party chairwoman Ines Schwerdtner delivered a pointed message: "The repression against pro-Palestinian movements must end. Palestinian self-determination can only go hand in hand with Jewish self-determination in Israel and Palestine, and vice versa."
Schwerdtner further urged her political organization to actively champion Palestinian rights.
The call comes one month after UN experts raised alarm bells over Germany's enforcement tactics at pro-Palestine rallies and what they termed the "suppression" of Palestine solidarity activism, which has grown markedly more restrictive since October 2023, according to their assessment.
The experts documented that Germany has been "criminalising, punishing, and suppressing legitimate Palestinian solidarity activism," despite acknowledging that the overwhelming majority of pro-Palestine demonstrations have remained peaceful.
UN specialists determined that demonstrators' objectives have been "legitimate," encompassing demands for "halting arms exports to Israel, ending the genocide and the Israeli illegal occupation, ensuring humanitarian aid access to Gaza, the recognition of the State of Palestine, and accountability" for international crimes.
