Palestine appreciates South Africa’s aid to Gaza citizens

(MENAFN) Palestine expressed gratitude to South Africa for granting entry to more than 150 of its citizens from the Gaza Strip, despite their inability to provide standard travel documents.

South Africa issued a 90-day visa exemption on Thursday for 153 Palestinians arriving from Kenya to seek asylum, although they were initially denied entry because they had not passed required interviews and lacked customary departure stamps in their passports.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Friday night that it “express[es] our appreciation and respect for the sovereign decision to grant entry visas to a number of our people from the Gaza Strip who arrived at South Africa’s airport from Israel’s Ramon Airport via the Kenyan capital Nairobi, despite their arrival without any prior notification or coordination with the country’s authorities.”

The ministry warned that companies or organizations that exploit Palestinians by encouraging relocation, human trafficking, or taking advantage of dire humanitarian conditions “will bear the legal consequences of their unlawful practices and will be subject to prosecution and accountability.” It instructed the Palestinian embassy in South Africa to work closely with authorities to manage the situation in a way that protects the dignity and safety of the citizens and helps alleviate their suffering after two years of ongoing Israeli attacks.

The ministry emphasized that human trafficking “constitutes a crime under international and national law that will not be tolerated” and urged families in Gaza to remain vigilant against unregistered or unofficial entities.

South Africa, known for its strong support of Palestinian rights, filed a case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Dec. 29, 2023, accusing Israel of violating its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention amid its continued bombing campaign in Gaza. Since October 2023, reports indicate that Israeli attacks have killed over 69,000 Palestinians and injured more than 170,700 others.
