France denounces ongoing US-led military operations in Caribbean
(MENAFN) France’s foreign minister has expressed concern over US-led military activities in the Caribbean, cautioning that they could destabilize an already sensitive region as G7 foreign ministers meet in southern Ontario.
Jean-Noel Barrot said it is crucial to avoid “instability caused by potential escalations,” citing warnings from Venezuela that recent US deployments risk provoking open conflict. “We have observed, with concern, military operations in the Caribbean region because they disregard international law,” he added.
Barrot emphasized that G7 nations should “work in concert” to fight drug trafficking while maintaining regional stability, noting that over a million French citizens in Caribbean territories could be directly affected by unrest.
Reports indicate that the US has expanded its military presence in Latin America, deploying Marines, warships, fighter and bomber jets, submarines, and drones. The USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier is reportedly en route to the Caribbean. US forces have also destroyed several Venezuelan fishing vessels allegedly carrying drugs, and President Trump has threatened action against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro over alleged drug involvement.
