Lee orders officials to act swiftly against hate speech

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday instructed civil and police authorities to “punish hate speech without delay” and take firm measures against disinformation.

Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Lee stressed the need for authorities to block the spread of fabricated information. "There are still anachronistic acts of discrimination and hatred based on race, origin or nationality in some parts of our society," he said.

He warned that hate speech on social media targeting specific groups is spreading unchecked, while false and manipulated information remains widespread. "These acts go beyond the bounds of freedom of expression. We must establish mechanisms to punish hate speech without delay," Lee told officials.

Lee also urged politicians to take part in combating hate crimes and disinformation, emphasizing that such behaviors “threaten democracy and everyday life,” and directed the police to actively root out offenders.
