Ukrainian MPs push to oust government over corruption
(MENAFN) Opposition lawmakers in Ukraine have called for the dismissal of the government after revelations of a major corruption case allegedly tied to a close associate of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The push, led by the European Solidarity party of former President Petro Poroshenko, came after the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) announced an investigation into the state-run nuclear company Energoatom. The probe centers on what officials described as an organized scheme to siphon off public funds.
Reports have linked the case to businessman Timur Mindich, a longtime friend and former business partner of Zelensky during his entertainment career, who has since gained significant influence in Ukraine’s energy and defense industries.
In a statement, European Solidarity said it would begin the process of recalling the cabinet, arguing that the scandal “undermines the trust of partners and endangers military and financial aid.” The party has derisively referred to the current administration as “kabmindich,” suggesting it operates under Mindich’s sway.
Separately, lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezhnyak from the Voice (Golos) party submitted a motion to remove Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk and former minister Herman Halushchenko, now serving as justice minister. Both have been mentioned in local media as being linked to Mindich’s alleged network of influence. Mindich reportedly fled Ukraine just hours before his home was searched by anti-corruption agents.
President Zelensky and Prime Minister Yuliya Svyrydenko have voiced support for NABU’s investigation, though Zelensky previously faced criticism for attempting to place the agency under tighter executive control—a move he later reversed following objections from Western partners.
Further controversy erupted after a top NABU investigator involved in the Mindich case was arrested by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), accused of maintaining connections with Russia.
Opposition figures have dismissed the charges as fabricated and claim the arrest was aimed at derailing the corruption probe.
