US removes all legal restrictions on Syrian embassy—Syrian FM

(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani announced Monday that the United States has officially removed all legal restrictions previously placed on Syria’s diplomatic mission and embassy in Washington, reinstating the country’s complete diplomatic presence in the U.S.

“We have received an official decision signed by my friend, the US Secretary of State, lifting all legal measures previously imposed on the Syrian mission and the Embassy of the Syrian Republic by the United States of America,” al-Shaibani said on the social platform X.

He noted that the decision restores “Syria’s ability to freely carry out its diplomatic role in the US, in line with the Syrian Foreign Ministry’s strategic plan.”

According to reports, the announcement follows closely on the heels of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s landmark visit to the White House, where he met with President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance. The trip marked the first time in decades that a Syrian head of state has visited the United States.

The restrictions on Syria’s diplomatic mission date back to March 2014, when the U.S. government suspended the operations of the Syrian Embassy and its consular services, citing Damascus’s lack of cooperation and the ongoing conflict that erupted after the Assad regime’s violent response to nationwide protests in 2011.
