U.S. Government Shutdown Halts Arms Exports to NATO Allies

(MENAFN) The ongoing U.S. government shutdown has postponed over $5 billion in weapons deliveries to European NATO nations, as well as subsequent shipments to Ukraine, a media outlet reported on Sunday.

A budget deadlock between Democrats and Republicans in Congress has extended the shutdown to 40 days, marking it as the longest in American history.

“This is actually really harming both our allies and partners and US industry to actually deliver a lot of these critical capabilities overseas,” a senior State Department official told the media outlet.

The postponed arms exports include AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, HIMARS, and various other military equipment intended for European NATO countries, the outlet added.

Although the source did not confirm the exact final destinations of the weapons, U.S. exports to NATO members are frequently routed to Ukraine, according to the media outlet.

The delay is attributed to a backlog in congressional approvals, as the State Department bureau responsible for briefing lawmakers on arms sales is functioning with just a quarter of its normal staff, the report said.

In addition, the shutdown has stalled discussions between Washington and Kyiv regarding future weapons transfers, a news agency reported last month.
