Rough Seas in Tenerife Claim Three Lives

(MENAFN) Three individuals lost their lives and fifteen others sustained injuries in different accidents connected to turbulent ocean conditions around the Spanish island of Tenerife, according to local emergency services.

This situation unfolded as the Canary Islands — a Spanish chain of islands that includes Tenerife — remained under alert for coastal dangers.

The most severe episode took place at Roque de las Bodegas beach in Taganana, within the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, when six French visitors were pulled into the sea by a massive wave, a news agency reported.

Rescue teams responded swiftly, deploying a medical helicopter and two basic life-support ambulances. One woman, who suffered “moderate injuries,” was transported by air to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital.

Four others with “minor injuries” were also taken to the same hospital, while another person received medical assistance on-site.

Local law enforcement informed a media outlet that the group had been “dragged into the water” after ignoring a “warning barrier” installed in the area because of the hazardous sea conditions.

Throughout the day, additional wave-related accidents were recorded along Tenerife’s shoreline, leading to further injuries and deaths, according to the report.

Officials have appealed to both locals and travelers to stay away from the coast until weather conditions become safer.
