Wave Disaster Leaves Three Dead, Fifteen Injured on Spain’s Tenerife
(MENAFN) Three lives were lost and 15 individuals sustained injuries across multiple wave-related emergencies on Tenerife, a Spanish island, according to statements from local emergency response teams.
The incidents unfolded as the Canary Islands—the Spanish archipelago containing Tenerife—remained under official warnings for coastal dangers.
The deadliest occurrence took place at Roque de las Bodegas beach in Taganana, situated within Santa Cruz de Tenerife municipality, where a massive wave dragged six French vacationers into the ocean, media reported.
Response teams mobilized resources including an air medical helicopter and two basic life-support ambulance units. Medical personnel airlifted one woman suffering moderate trauma to Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria University Hospital. Hospital-bound transport was also provided for four additional victims with minor trauma, while emergency crews treated a fifth individual on-site.
A news agency received confirmation from local police that the victims were pulled into the water after disregarding a warning barrier that had been placed in the area due to rough sea conditions.
Additional life-threatening wave incidents occurred throughout the day along various points of the island's shoreline, causing further casualties and injuries, the report confirmed.
Official warnings have been issued urging both local residents and visiting tourists to stay clear of beach zones until maritime conditions stabilize.
