Trump claims BBC tried to influence 2024 election
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has accused the BBC of attempting to influence the 2024 presidential election, alleging that the British state-funded broadcaster manipulated public perception by editing his January 6, 2021 speech, according to reports.
The allegations emerged after BBC Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness resigned Sunday over controversy surrounding the hour-long documentary Trump: A Second Chance?, which aired a week before last year’s election.
“The TOP people in the BBC, including TIM DAVIE, the BOSS, are all quitting/FIRED, because they were caught ‘doctoring’ my very good (PERFECT!) speech of January 6th,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The documentary reportedly combined segments of Trump’s speech delivered nearly an hour apart and paired them with protest footage filmed before he began speaking. The controversy was sparked by a whistleblower memo from former BBC standards adviser Michael Prescott, later exposed by The Telegraph, alleging that senior executives ignored complaints from the corporation’s own standards watchdog.
Trump thanked The Telegraph for revealing what he called “Corrupt ‘Journalists’” and condemned the alleged actions as “very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election.” He added, “What a terrible thing for Democracy!” and emphasized that the interference came “from a Foreign Country, one that many consider our Number One Ally.”
The BBC is funded through a compulsory licence fee of £174.50 ($229), with the UK government also contributing to a portion of its World Service programming. The White House has previously criticized the broadcaster as a “Leftist propaganda machine” and “100 percent fake news,” accusing it of portraying Trump dishonestly.
This is not the first time Trump has alleged British involvement in the 2024 election. In October, his campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission claiming that the UK’s Labour Party aided Democrats by sending operatives to key U.S. swing states. British officials denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the work was legal and unpaid.
