Congressional negotiators seek to end government shutdown—Trump

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump announced Sunday that congressional negotiators are nearing a breakthrough to end the 40-day U.S. government shutdown and reopen federal agencies, according to reports.

“It looks like we’re getting very close to the shutdown ending,” Trump told reporters upon his return to the White House.

His remarks came as several outlets reported that lawmakers were finalizing a bipartisan deal to fund the government through the end of January. In return, Senate Republicans would commit to holding a vote on extending key health care subsidies set to expire on January 1.

The Senate met Sunday evening local time to vote on the short-term funding proposal. If passed, the measure would move to the House of Representatives before heading to the president’s desk for approval, clearing the way to resume government operations.

Democratic senators Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan, and Angus King indicated they would support reopening the government if the Senate endorsed a three-year spending plan and extended temporary funding through January.

Reports suggested that Democrats eased their earlier demands for a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies—a main obstacle in prior negotiations—to allow the funding bill to advance. The party had initially sought to secure continued Affordable Care Act tax credits and undo Medicaid cuts introduced under Trump’s spending agenda.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Sunday night that Republicans had reached a compromise with centrist Democrats and called for an urgent vote to move the process forward.

However, unresolved issues remained, including Democratic demands to reinstate federal employees dismissed during the shutdown. For the temporary measure to advance, at least eight Democrats would need to join Republicans to surpass the required 60-vote threshold.
